Notes: The Proof Notes is inspired by Francis Hopkinson’s preface to a 1788 collection of his songs: his process of tuning the harpsichord in perfect 5ths and checking major 3rds as “proof notes” - which is essentially a quick approach to meantone temperament. I expanded his sequence by fleshing out implied harmonies and articulating more partials to create a slowly modulating chorale. Originally composed as part of "In Plain Air" for organ and a large ensemble of sustaining instruments, it may be imagined for other ensemble types, spatialized or not.
