NOTES: Quatre Huitres develops several techniques on the hammered dulcimer over its four movements (literally “four oysters”). Leather and wooden hammers are used, as well as a magnetic “ebow”, plucking harmonics, retuning, playing behind the bridges, and various string buzzes. At times a tour de force, it uses the full range of of a 4+ octave dulcimer. Composed at the Camargo Foundation in France, it was the first piece I had written for myself in years, and I made a point to write material that I really had to practice.
