NOTES: The idea for Dovetail grew out an interest in the kinematics of bouncing balls and from my memory of a snare drum lesson with Tom Freer (Cleveland Orchestra). I don’t think that he specifically used any carpentry terminology when he was describing overlapping strokes, but the image of a dovetail joint really stuck in my mind. It was a good lesson. At any rate, the superimposition of accelerating and decelerating movement between the hands is the central idea of this work, commissioned for the 2011 Modern Snare Drum Competition.
